ST. LOUIS, MO – Sugar Creek Capital has expanded into the renewable natural gas (RNG) sector by finalizing a $53 million tax credit investment with Maas Energy Works (MEW), the leading dairy digester operator in the U.S.
The transaction involved Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credits. MEW generated the credits through dairy RNG facilities in their portfolio. Each project uses anaerobic digesters to break down manure and produce biogas, which is then processed into RNG for use as vehicle fuel.
“Adding renewable natural gas to our investment platform reflects our view that the energy transition will require a diverse mix of technologies,” Blake Schrader, Director of Investor Relations at Sugar Creek Capital, said.
The transaction marks the addition of renewable natural gas as a new asset class within Sugar Creek Capital’s investment portfolio. RNG projects represent an opportunity to invest in domestic energy infrastructure while supporting the firm’s long-standing mission of sustainable investing with meaningful social impact.
“Our mission has always been to direct capital toward investments that create lasting benefits for communities,” Raj Mehta, Partner and Head of Sugar Creek’s Renewable Energy Group, said. “This transaction allows us to expand that mission into rural America by supporting projects that generate economic opportunity alongside clean energy production.”
